In recent years, there has been a significant shift in how we understand and support neurodivergent individuals. Moving away from deficit-based approaches, neurodiversity-affirming practice recognises neurodiversity, including autism, ADHD and dyslexia, as a natural and valuable form of human variation.

Reflecting this shift, and its alignment with inclusive education for autistic students, the Autism CRC published the National Guidance for Best Practice in Inclusive Education for Autistic Students (Adams et al., 2026). This guidance brings together current research with the perspectives and lived experiences of autistic people and the broader community.

At the heart of genuine inclusive education is a commitment to ongoing professional learning — bridging the gap between awareness and everyday classroom practice. By developing a deeper understanding of autistic learning styles, sensory profiles and ways of engaging, teachers can better recognise each student’s individual strengths, needs and preferences.

This specialised training supports teachers to understand how the classroom environment can influence a student’s regulation, participation and learning. It provides practical guidance for adapting planning, teaching and assessment, as well as supporting the thoughtful use of designated safe spaces for students experiencing sensory overload.

With specialised knowledge, reflective practice and a genuinely inclusive approach, schools can move beyond simply accommodating autistic students towards creating environments in which they can participate, regulate, learn and thrive.

Module 1 – Foundations of Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice

Introduces the principles of neurodiversity and neurodiversity-affirming practice, including the shift from deficit-based to strengths-based perspectives.

Module 2 – Understanding Autism Through a Neurodiversity-Affirming Lens

Explores autistic learning styles, sensory experiences, communication and engagement through a contemporary neurodiversity-affirming framework.

Module 3 – Inclusive Pedagogy for Autistic Students

Examines how neurodiversity-affirming principles can be translated into inclusive classroom practice, including planning, teaching, environmental adaptations and student support.
